these were based on photo books at the library during oic draw-at-the-library. Since the library is rather careful about what you bring in to the reference section, I just brought the minimum compact tools. And I had to be careful not to spray any ink on their expensive books! Mornings are the best times as it doesn't get crowded yet. Join us next time. Ballpoint/pencil + brush and ink.

It's amazing what you can learn drawing from photography books and other reference materials. (eg. books on underwater photography, cities, landscapes, ancient artifacts, architecture, old japanes drawings, etc.) So this saturday morning, if you are looking for a relaxing quiet cool place to draw, want to discover new interesting subject matters to draw, and chill out with other illustrators, then join us at the art reference section of the National Library (Bras Basah) 8th floor locker area at 10am-12.00pm+. Cost is FREE. Can leave anytime. We will go for lunch after that. (but have your own breakfast)

DO: bring a sketch pad (not in booklet form) or sheets of paper. Bring pens, pencils, erasers, small pencil box. DO NOT: bring paints or materials that will look like they will damage their books. Be late because seats at the reference section get taken up fast so please come on time. Talk in the library (whisper if you must.)

Thanks to 5 Secs Face that have taken so many beautiful pictures that have been my source of wonderful references of people. These were all done based on the pictures taken by Fleecircus, with media such as pen & ink, watercolor washes, magic pens, markers and etc. Each portrait took no longer than 10 mins.

Book cover illustration for "The Prince of neither here nor there" by Sean Cullen (Penguin). The brief called for the focus to be on the medallion so I played around with the lighting, such that the fairies are illuminated just enough to stand out against the dark background. I did this a while back but the book was only just published recently.

The Diary of Amos Lee: Girls, Guts and Glory!
Hot on the shelves, 2nd of the series, following the successful "I sit, I write, I flush!” (Top 10 of Straits Times, Bestseller's List).

Written by Adeline Foo, “Girls, Guts and Glory!”, is packed with more full scene illustrations as compared to the first book, including "photographs" taken by Amos with his Polaroid camera (Sneeky, sneeky). This Project took about 3mths to complete including layout and cover. Although I would have liked more time to improve on a few things, I reckon it’s pretty decent work and a step up from the previous book.

Latest news, we have ran outta copies and bringing in more for the bookfest at Suntec. It is nice to see that hard work with heart thrown in is appreciated. So a word of thanks to everyone and yeahhhh... I've got my social life back. – Enjoy :D

Eating "You Tiao"

Here’s another comic illustration of myself eating a fritter. However, in this case, it is not entirely a fritter. This local delicacy is named “You Tiao” (in romanized Chinese). You may read the following cut n paste from Wikipedia:

“You tiao,[1] you char kway,[2] or yau ja gwai,[3] sometimes known in English as Chinese cruller fried bread stick or Chinese doughnut, is a long, golden-brown, deep fried strip of dough in Chinese cuisine and other East and Southeast Asian cuisines and is usually eaten for breakfast. Conventionally, youtiao are lightly salted and made so they can be torn lengthwise in two. Youtiao are normally eaten as an accompaniment for rice congee or soy milk.”

I love to eat it dipped in coffee for breakfast!!

Hi everybody- if you are approached directly by some people for some projects- please think about how much fees you will be paid and for what cost. Please double check with myself or Fleecircus if you are not sure.

The recent one is for some hand painted laptops ( 20 pieces- to be used as prizes in a contest ) which we have negotiated and rejected because the fee is too low.
The laptop cost - S$1.8k + your hand-painted work- it should cost more than S$2.5k in value ). Please do not be greedy and spoil the market by doing it at anything less than S$1.5k per piece. If the client can afford to GIVE as a prize a 1.8K laptop- they should be able to pay the artists MORE.
Please take note. Don't spoil OUR market.

Since coming back, I have been running around looking for good hawkers' centers food. So far I have tasted prawn noodle, Chuey Kuey, fried Hokkien noodle, dim sum, fried carrot cake, Hainan chicken rice and etc... Dim Sum at Red Star Restaurant (Chin Swee Rd) sucks!! Hainan chicken rice opposite Bugis Junction along Bras Basah Rd serves too little chicken!! But its Laksa was terrific!! Henceforth this fun drawing to remember that special moment!!

Hello guys from OIC... I am back. Not very sure whether it is back for good, but it is good to be back after say about 3.5 years. No plans yet for now just lazing around catching up with friends and eating all the local delicacies. I missed Singapore coffee and Chuey Kuey the most, so the second day I was back, I had to have them. By the way I am really thankful for the weather to be so kind to us since last week, even though it is still extremely humid. I am literally swimming in my own perspirations and have to carry a big towel whenever I go. Well, if anyone of you guys do feel like having coffee do feel free to call me whenever. LOL :P I have nothing better to do for the moment.

Hi everyone, I need some advice on enlarging illustration and yet maintaining high picture resolution. I don't work in vectors and I ink my drawings and paint them in Photoshop or the traditional way. My working size is usually within a4 to a3 size. If I wanted to enlarge my work to a1 and bigger (sticker for wall mural/standee size?) how should I go about it? Please advise! :)

NBDC and SPH are launching 9 new locally created picture books this saturday at The Arts House 6.15-745pm. Among the 9, there is 1 book illustrated by me (drewscape) and another by Kristal Melson. You will be able to purchase these new books and get them signed by their creators at the end of the event.

Hello again everyone. It has been another hectic 2 months finding a new place, moving out, packing-unpacking, working at a new place and getting my own internet set up. Now that all that is sorted out, I'm looking forward to return as a regular at portrait day.

What I've been held hostage by...

This year's theme is "Butterflies". As usual, there is a layer of gold hotstamping in certain areas of the illustration.The typeface for the main title was rejected and replaced with a more conventional one, but i prefer this typeface, feels more appropriate to me. Cheers!

Msxi for Hansel A/W09

A collaboration with fashion label Hansel, to create an animation for Jo's A/W09 collection titled ROBOT GIRL!
Animation was initially done on pencil and paper, frame by frame, then animated on PS CS3 (which isnt the best program for animation, but due to my lack of skills, it was easier to manage) and stitching up of scenes on iMovie. If you do not possess programs like Final Cut Pro you could use iMovie to put animation and music tracks together. It took me approximately 3 weeks to conceptualise, draw and animate this piece. And all thanks to Adrian Wee for his sound expertise !

Some highlights for me at MAAD on top of meeting the regulars were...
- Seeing all the 3x3x30 entries.
- Meeting MESSYMSXI. Didn't know she's back. Hoping to hear her share about her work soon.
- Joeel/ Ejetc came by- he gave some good advice. Thanks Joeel! :)
- Teng Hong dropped by too- hope he get's website/ folio up soon. This guy is an amazing artist! Respect!
- Alice K- You should meet a person like this at least once a month! Her cheerfulness is infectious! ( This sister has a stall at MAAD. )
- Nana's Roomism paper toy mod stall. Nice idea! esp with kids. Didn't realise that there's a machine for cutting the templates.
- The 5 Sec Faces - hope they have collected enough faces!
- MAAD's Mamasan's new look!

This is a long due post for Michael and everyone at OIC.

First and foremost, Happy Birthday OIC ... CONGRATULATIONS to Michael, FleeCircus, San San, Twisstii, Andrew and those I haven't met or got the name yet, but who has been working so hard on OIC, promoting illustrators from Singapore. Thank you and give each one of you a big round of applause. You guys rock!

Also congratulations to all of the participants of A6/Future show. Excellent work. So much energy in each piece.

Secondly, just want to let you know that Guai Wu The Chinese Elf, the picture book that I have been working on for the longest time, is finally out!

I have a launch for kids this Sunday (4th October) at Borders Book Parkway at 2pm and would like to invite all of you to come and join me and my writer Adeline Foo. Lee Kowling, another children's book illustrator-friend will be hosting her event for her picture book Georgette's Mooncake and The Beaded Slippers, written by the same author, this Saturday (3rd October) at Borders Book Wheelock at 2pm.

Thanks to Michael and FleeCircus again for advising on the colour scans. I have lots to learn from the two masters. :)

advice needed on painting on metal surfaces

I'm looking for some advice on painting on metal surfaces - have a project where i've been asked to do some artwork/painting on laptops (aluminium surface) and some digital camera body cases (some kind of metal surface apparently "finished off with a thick, glossy lacquer").

- from what i understand metal surfaces require sanding and priming; but what sort of paint is applicable after that - acrylics? spray paints?

- is there a way of painting on the camera lacquer surface without sanding it down?

- and is there are means of masking of areas of line work besides the very manual way of applying the mask and using a penknife to remove the edges? i'm thinking especially of any printing processes that would produce ready-to-use masking material.

any advice or leads would be much appreciated! :)

Illustrated Book as a Wedding Gift

Some illustrated pages of a book for an acquaintance who wanted to present it to her husband as a wedding gift. The book was to capture their shared experiences and aspirations. The story was completely her own and although the turn around time was tight, I had fun illustrating it. :)

In preparation for our OIC 3rd anniversary events ( http://oicsingapore.com/events.html ), we are asking for all OIC artists to submit your designs for the following:

1. OIC 3x3x30 exhibition ( Hand drawn/ painted )
This is going to be very fun. See instructions listed here. We will be selecting 90 pieces of 3inch x 3inch art to be featured as part of our 3rd anniversary exhibition. The artwork will be shown at MAAD and Asylum.

2. OIC rubberstamp series for 2009/2010
Must have the "OIC" in the design
Keep it witty, cute and bold. Size 5cmx5cm 300dpi B/W art.
